Folks I need some help, I have a 1990 ford ranger. Came with 2.3 manual. Rwd . Bought a 1992 Ford Explorer for donor and am swapping the 4.0 in. The transmission the explorer came with is 4 wheel drive. What transmissions can I mount up to the 4.0? Thanks

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
2.8, 2.9 or 4.0 transmissions.

c3/c4/c5 a4ld and oll of its later variants...all the way into the mustang versions in the 2000's and ranger to 2011, the later variants require stand alone or piggyback ford pcms's...

there were setups to swap 60 deg 700 r4(awesome for 4.0) and fullsize ford stuff for a bit....you have to hunt for it.

it is a very under served family for the most part...in this country anyway. there are a few more options overseas.

You can use the 4x4 trans/t-case in a 2wd truck. It gets you low range, just no 4x4. You would just need the proper drive shaft.

I'm new to this form and am in the middle of trying to put a inline transmission filter back on. But can not remember which direction it goes as I do not know which line is my hot line entering the cooler and the cold/return line.

Get two buckets. Stick one side of the open cooler line in each bucket and crank the engine, don't let it start.

Whichever bucket has fluid in it is coming from the transmission.
