I convinced my girlfriend to fix up my old 1997 ranger that I parked on the side of the house(97k miles!) instead of buying her a new commuter car. Battery, sparks, wires, flushed radiator, oil etc. It runs great, except the timing is a little off at idle. Gonna fix that tomorrow with my neighbor. The problem I forgot about was I pulled fuse 13 to get it moving last time I moved.

Fuse 13 on the 97 disables the anti-theft but it also disables the break lights. I have torn my house apart for the last 3 days looking and I cannot find my clickers. I have also looked on ebay/amazon for a replacement, but I can't find one similar there either.

What I need: Either a work around for the anti-theft that doesnt require me to start it fuse out and let it run for 15 mins before I drive it. Or a good link to a site that sells a replacement clickers. I had it before, but when the battery dies, it defaults to ON.

Guys, it's my first post here and I understand anything I have to take for it. But I seriously tried to solve this on my own to no avail..

last bit of info - manual windows and locks. 97 2.3 4 cyl manual.

thank you if you can help

Welcome to TRS :)

You could have a Ford alarm(horn honks) or a Dealer alarm(siren), there is different wiring for both and different key fobs.
Or even a 3rd party installed by previous owner or shop.
Factory alarm will used the horn, Dealer installed Ford alarm will use a separate siren

Read here: http://www.justanswer.com/ford/0dbkn-disable-stock-alarm-system-1997-ford-ranger.html

Once you find out which system you have you can get a key fob and program it to work with that system if you want

It doesn't honk or use a siren. All it does is kill the ignition and make the turn signals blink. I bought this thing back in 2001 from an elderly couple and I doubt they did anything to it.

I have been doing some reading, and I am gonna go take the kick panel off now and see if it's wired the same as factory. green/purple wire.

I am sort of confused. My 97 did not have a factory alarm system. It had PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System). I am not sure when PATS became standard rather than an option. It also had electric door locks. Those systems are completely separate and operated by separate modules.

The "clicker" would lock and unlock the doors and had a panic button that would cause the horn to beep repeatedly. That is controlled by a module behind the glove box that interfaces with the cabin control module.

The PATS system used a key with transponder chip in it and an antenna next to the ign sw and module somewhere around the left side of the radio. When the key is turned to run the computer pulses the key through the antenna and the chip responds with a code. If the code is in the computer's memory it will allow the injectors to operate when the engine is started. If it gets the wrong code - no go. The truck came with two keys and if you have both you can program two more. If you have just one key you can get it cloned for a spare. If no key SOL. It is a dealer repair. I have been told that there are locksmiths that can fix it; but, no experience.

Not having "clicker" will not have any effect on the starting if you can get into the truck. Not having the correct married key will cause a no start.

1999 Rangers with V6 were the first with PATS, but late 1998 could have it.

Explorers got in 1998, so maybe late 1997 but never ran across it

1996 was first year of PATS but only on a few models and not all of that model had PATS

If you had PATS in a 1997 Ranger with stock engine/PCM then you had a unicorn for sure, don't doubt it just never ran across it

Since I am old I get to say, "If I remember right!" Maybe it was the '99.
