Ok quick question for all the 4.0 experts, how do you tell what year engine you have? I have one, from what I was told was a 94, but I was just looking at the explorer book and it says that 96 and on the rear seal is flush with the back of the block....mine is flush. Now I don't know if someone else has replaced it wrong or maybe my engine is in fact a 96 or newer. It is the pushrod engine.

Thanks for any information,
Louis

Well, number of bolt holes in the crank can provide a clue, but it will only tell you if it's 98 and up. Intake manifolds are different from some years, but I'm not sure of the details of that.

A lot of sensors can indicate if it's equipped for OBD-II, which would indicate a 96+ engine.
