Hello Rangerstation! I am new to the forum, looking for any help or advice on a speed density to MAF conversion project for my 86 Ranger 2.9 4x4. It has been modified with a performance cam, aftermarket heads, headers and performance exhaust. The speed density system does not like the mods, prone to stalling and poor driveability around town. I got the idea for the conversion from an old posting in 2004 entitled Ford 2.9 MAF Conversion by Bob Marrs. The article states that you need a computer from a '90 Ranger with MAF and it is a California vehicle. My parts supplier is not able to find one for 4wd, only 2wd. I don't understand why the 2wd should be any different. I am going to try it as this seems to be my only option.

I think the difference is that if you have push button 4x4 the computer has to relay some info to allow the 4-low shift.

If you have manual 4x4 it doesn't matter even a little bit.

Thanks for the reply! Mine is a manual. So good to hear that as I already ordered other parts including a performance MAF. After I get it running with the new computer and MAF I want to upgrade to bigger injectors, Tom Morana intake manifold, K&N cold air intake. I will posting updates with pics

Yeah, I know at least one of my 4x4s is running on a 2wd PCM, but since all my stuff has manual 4x4, it doesn't matter.
