'97 to '02 F-150 with 4.2l V6 will have an M5OD-R2 with same bolt pattern as 5.0l and those years will have the shifter towards the rear like the Ranger M5OD-R1, so will line up almost in the same place in a ranger.

4x4 matters as well you need the transfer case with the M5OD-R2 if you want to stay with 4WD, Ranger transfer case won't work

I have a friend that can get me a brand new m5od-r2 transmission and transfer case cheap and was just wondering if those were the only years they made this transmission or if something changed on it that I have to find one within these years

No, they were made for many years, earlier version, pre-'97, had shift tower farther forward, not sure about '04 and up

'97-'03 are the years with shifter in similar position for use in Ranger.
I have read you can use top plate(shifter plate) from these years in older M5OD-R2 to reposition shift tower but never done it so...............

You can of course use any year and make a custom shift arm, bent to use in Ranger.

According to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_M5OD_transmission
F-150 used it from '97-'08 so they may be the same up to '08, shifter farther back
The '88-'96 version had the shifter farther forward

The "other" Rangers and Everest mentioned are not sold in North America, they are international Ford models.

The older M5ODR2 will work, but as stated the shifter sits further forward. Mine from a 1994 turned out just fine using that except the NP205 transfer case had to have a 1/4" adapter plate to bolt up to the transmission due to the webbing on the transmission. The shift towers/assembly are not interchangeable between the V6 and V8 versions--I tried. The V8 version has steel shift fingers which are quite narrow and the V6 version has aluminum? which are much wider. You will want to stick with a 4406 or NP205 transfer case as the 1356 is very hard to fit into the Ranger. (tried that too) It can be done, but the clearances are very tight and may require frame modification. Don't know if anyone mentioned this, but you will have to enlarge the bolt holes on the V6 version to mate it to the 5.0.

How will this affect my 4 wheel drive model will I also need to cut a slot in the floor for the 4wheel drive since mine is a switch?
