I'll start with the donor motor and trans, may reveal some red flags I haven't considered.

I have an extremely beat up 86 Ranger 2.9L, 4x4, manual trans, manual transfer case. I've put a lot of work into replacing the heads on the engine and other upgrades. Drove it for a few months then something happened with the electrical that shorted my ignition coil, it was cracked on the bottom? Replaced it with a new coil then an unidentified wire burnt in 2 places in the engine bay while I was driving a week later. When it started smoking I quickly disconnected the ignition coil and it stopped smoking. Starter and alt tested good. Been out of commission ever since.

I've been looking for a Ranger or Bronco 2 with a bad engine or trans that still has the wiring harness intact. My plan is to drop my engine and trans from my ranger into the new truck rather than deal with fixing all the wiring that appears to be poorly done by PO after an engine swap.

I finally found a decent 89 B2 4x4 with a blown head gasket or cracked head. Initially I figured it would be a straight swap and I could use the B2's engine harness on my Ranger's motor. They both are 2.9L engines with manual trans and 4x4. Only difference is the B2 has the crap electric transfer case that I'm not keeping.

I was comparing the wiring diagrams of the 2 years and now I'm questioning the compatibility. I'm no electrician so I haven't compared the diagrams in depth.

Can someone please advise if this swap will work without wiring harness mods. Or should I just try to rebuild the 89 engine from the heads up?

I appreciate any advice.

It will work just fine. The 86 will have parts that don't plug in, but the computer won't care because it wasn't setup for them.

So will I need to use the computer from the 86 Ranger in the 89 B2?

No. You use the 89 computer and don't plug in the knock sensor or EGR that were deleted in 88.

Oh ok. Thanks for the help. Hopefully I can get this B2 and get it on the road soon. Rarely see them in my area.
