Help! I need somebody! Help! Not just anybody!
Help! I need someone to help me with a transmission! Haha:headbang:
So I was driving down the road in my newly bought 86 ranger and noticed it was having trouble shifting and then.... RPM went up but speed went down and found my self with a truck that can't move.
Long story short I got stranded with a completely trashed transmission
It won't go into any gear or reverse or even 4x4
So I'm going to try to make an effort to rebuild it my self.
I've got basic knowledge of motors as I used to be a diesel tech assistant
But tranz is a whole new level for me.

Now I really havnt done tranny work and I don't have money to take it in to fix.
Is it hard rebuilding a transmission like mine? What's needed? Any idea on why it took a dump?

Thanks for reading guys
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you've never rebuilt one I wouldn't suggest starting with this one. These A4LD Automatic transmissions are notorious for failures, there's a whole thread related to them as a matter of fact LOL.

I just had one rebuilt in my 88 Bronco 2, $2400, they replace all wear parts, which is clutch packs, bands, etc. I also had them add a larger transmission cooler. Heat kills automatic transmissions, and most likely the previous owner knew it was failing and got rid of it as a result.

I'd suggest finding a shop to rebuild it. They do all the updates when they do the rebuilds if its a good shop, it will be better than it was from new.

Thanks man it looks like I'll just have to wait to get it fixed then.
Would I be able to put a better trans in it? Or would that just be a waste of money?
