Only years that don't have a A4LD is '84 and '85.

Yes, it's an A4LD.

Yes, it's garbage.

Don't fix, convert to manual.

Be happy forever.

Listen to him. I regret not ditching the A4LD when I put a 92 Explorer's 4.0. Now due to the stupid transmission, it still doesn't run thanks to the shift arm on the transmission being upside down! Still can't fix it, and that's why the Bronco wasn't ready. I hate the A4LD and i have never driven with it :annoyed:

With a bellhousing from a '84 or '85 Bronco or Ranger . . you can bolt a C4 behind your engine. But you loose OD, but have a much better transmission. If you need OD, go manual.

Wrong! a C5 is not an OD transmission. It is a 3 speed. I have converted 2 C5s to C4s. There are a couple simple changed that make them effectively a C4. I have the stock C5 in my '84 Bronco connected to a V8 now, and in C4 guise. Most C5s had a lock up converter, except in Rangers and Broncos. Still that doesn't make it an OD.

I am shamed. Locked up converters are not od. AOD is what I should of said. Or go with a 4r70 out of a 3.8 sn197 mustang.

What Will be THE CHEAPEST route to go for a 4.0 with good reliability AUTOMATIC preferably for the simple fact of 1 i need this to be a DD for a while and don't want to have to shift up shift down. Because the stop lights and stop signs around me are about 1/3 mile apart so its go up to 2nd gear and then first then second and third and back to first. The only thing is my dad got the A4LD Rebuilt about 350 miles ago when he drove it for 3 months before the truck became mine.

The v6 99-04 mustangs 4r70 bolts to a 5.0 block which, correct me if I am wrong, shares the same bolt pattern as a 2.9.

You are wrong. The 2.9 shares with the 2.8 and 4.0.
