I picked up new pivot bushings for my D35, reading in my faithful Haynes manual it says after being pressed in they must have the one side that doesn't have a flare flared to hold them in place. Use a special tool available at most parts stores blah blah blah.

Not surprisingly nobody has heard of said special tool. Is there another way to do it? Any ideas?

I hate to go buy the special tool when I am likely ever going to need it to do two bushings...

The original bushings had the metal sleeve around them that needed to be flared. I've never seen a replacement bushing with the metal sleeve. Take the original bushing out, but leave the sleeve. Press your new bushing into that, no special tool needed.

I think, failing everything else, you could take a hammer & punch and try pounding the edge outward to flare it that way. This is just an assumption though, never have actually tried it (I did as kunar mentioned on mine, just replaced the bushing itself. Many urethane bushings are sold sleeveless).

I used a cold chisel and kind of "peened" the collar, if that makes sense. Just checked and nothing has moved, been several years.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"

depending on style i do this, or use my ball joint press with a modified trailer bearing race if it is the long style to flare it....

this style i just raise it with the punch/dimple method and use "bearing mount

i prefer that style, they fit good if the oem unit slide out right.

That is the style I started out with, others mentioned the poly ones and they look easier to put in, are cheaper and everyone seems to like them.
