Just going to make a page for rebuilding this thing. Out of a '95 Ranger.

Trying to get it apart. Got it down to the bare knuckle on the beam with the axle shaft in it. Cannot get the spindle off. Wheel speed sensor block that goes over the spindle is off as are all 5 nuts. Any ideas? Neither a deadblow or pry bar will shake it.

I've only done a spindle removal once on a d28. It was also very hard to get off. I used a piece of 2x4 and a 3lb hammer to work it loose. I'd give a couple good wacks and turn it slightly and a couple more wacks, turning each time before wacking again.

Did you remove the 5 studs as well as the nuts holding the spindle on? The spidle likely needs to wiggle side to side to come off; that can't happen with the studs in. You can just pound them from the front through the back of the knuckle.

I just went through this on my Dana 35 rebuild.

When I dissected the D28 from my parts truck the spindle came off without complaint, this thing is a bugger.

Studs are still in, I tried to rock it back and forth with a hammer and punch on the notch cutout and no dice. There is a boss that goes into the knuckle, wonder if that isn't part of my problem. My D28 had a tin cup that went between the spindle and knuckle.

They make a big socket looking tool that fits on a slide hammer. The socket threads on the threads at the end of the spindle and holds it. Put the slide hammer on the end of the socket and go to hammering it off. It is tight, so it wont just "pop off".

Took it over to dad to have him look at it and give him my $.02 on it. He gets his big bearing driver punch (a old flattened chisel) and a hammer and we walk it out of the knuckle giving it love taps from the axle side.

On the front axleshaft where it is splined and the the shaft that goes to the PS slides into the one coming out of the differential there is a boot, anyone know where to get said boot or what the part # is?

Also anyone know if someone is still making splash shields for the brakes?

I always just used an aftermarket shock boot and two zip ties to replace it. With the C-clip eliminator spring the stock boot wouldn't fit anyway.

I gave up on driveshaft slip yoke boots years ago...they just get torn off in a few minutes in the rocks.lol I just lube them up good every trip.

The only rock I run on is the crushed limestone they cover the roads with and it produces copious amounts of dust. I would like to have a boot, the c-clip eliminator in the tech library shows the boot staying.

I see it is the same as a D28 so that is a work around if mine has much life left in it.

I used a large spring on the OD of the shaft and there was no way to get the boot back over it. If you used an internal spring the boot should work just fine.

Yeah I have an external spring with the boot over it on mine also. It's sort of a tight fit, but very doable.

The D28 boot is much smaller than the D35/D44 boot.

I would think so but the places that have the D35 one also list it fitting a D28 and even a D50. :icon_confused:
