Hi
Just bought 2008 Ranger Sport 4X4 V6 4 L. last month with just over 47,000 mi on it.
I went and bought everything needed for an oil change.
Drained the oil which was filthy, but when I went to remove the oil filter, it was a different size in length and diameter than what the owners manual, and the Fram book at Wal-Mart showed, and needless to say, caused this old man a bit of confusion. Manual showed FL 820S, and Fram showed PH2,TG2 and/or XG2.
So I went with the XG2 which as known from the past, all 3 Fram filters are the same size.
Now, the filter that was installed is a Pennzoil FP-173. Just a little longer in length, but a smaller diameter than the Fram filter. Apparently, whoever changed the oil last found out that the Pennzoil filter would fit. After some checking, I found out that the Pennzoil filter that was installed was the incorrect filter. Anyway, finally got it removed and the XG2 installed. I guess now that everything is ok. Since the old Pennzoil filter seemed to have fit, Does anyone think that any damage was done to the engine? Any ideas on why they had this filter on there in the first place? Thanks, ford truck guy
