Has Ford ever considered a Diesel platform in a Ranger?
Also, what small diesels would fit without completely reinforcing the entire truck?

They had diesels in rangers I can't remember if it was a 2.0 or 2.3L in the 80's but the did turbo diesels and in south america they have diesel rangers in current trucks. other countries get the coolest stuff

If I recall, Ford did offer deisels in the frist-gen Ranger. Both 4-banger. One was a 2.2 non-turbo Perkins and the other was a turbo 2.3 Mitsubishi.

My credo
"220, 221, whatever it takes."
1st Gens from around 85 to 88 had an available diesel. The diesel used in South American Rangers will not pass emissions standards in the U.S.

Occasionally an old diesel Ranger will turn up on eBay and someone will post it here. Thing is, they used a totally different tranny and if you ever need tranny parts you're SOL.

I was thinking maybe a Liberty CRD swap into a Ranger until doing a little reading on them ......... you could not give me one ...... no wonder they [Jeep Liberty] can't hold their value.......

the 4bt would probably be a good swap. It is the cummins 4 cylinder or if you are adventurous the 6bt the straight six cummins turbo diesel......yeeeaaaa.....

The best swap is the International 2.8L or 3.0L (known as the Powerstroke in foreign countries)... Used by Ford in foreign countries and it's a variant of the Land Rover 200/300tdi engines...

The 2.3L 4BT is a very good candidate for a Ranger swap. Its very similar to the 4D55 Mitsu engine that was used. Think 2.9L vs. 4.0. Also gives you better tranny options.

There was a guy in the TRS Mag the other month that put a 3.9 4BT in his ranger. I looked into this but it almost requires the D-60 SAS and def requires at least 6 inches of body lift. Its also a very tight fit. I decided that for what I wanted to do it completely defeated my purposes.

Um, the 4BT is a 3.9L 4 cylinder diesel, not a 2.3L or 4.9L, I think you have everything confused...

There is a 2.3L cummins. They aren't common, but they are out there. The 4.9 was a typo on my part. I meant to put in 3.9.

My info was gotten from a dodge guy who was helping me try to figure out what I was going to need. I don't have much interest in anything dodge or cummins.

Yea, I was hoping he could come up with something... The International engine are a much better swap candidate due to higher power and lower weight than either the 3.9 or 3.3... From what I've heard it's almost impossible to find a 3.3...

I'm sorry, the 2.3L was an A series, not a B series. Like I said, my information was second hand from a dodge guy I know.
