why the hell hasn't ford pulled there head out of there ass's and made a hybrid ranger?
they sell like pancakes so why not put a ford ranger 4.0 hybrid that gets 30 or more mpg.

the Hybrid escape did not sell all that well ....... even though it was designed by Toyota and 2/3 the cost of a Highlander HyBrid, the Toyota out sold it so they are nervious about the Hybrid.

and a gas guzzling 4.0 in a hybrid would be stupid....it would get pathetic highway mileage (worse than a normal 4.0 truck). the electric motor makes up for the lack of low-end torque from a 4 banger...making it perform more like a 4.0, while still getting decent mileage on the highway.

The idea of the hybrids are to get big engine performance out of a small gas sipping engine. The concept is nothing new either. Mining dump trucks and Train engines have used it for decades.

the full-sized hybrids use v-8's because they have an extra 3,000lbs of chassis to carry around....and as a result, they are lucky to break the 20MPG barrier. the tahoe hybrid is rated at 21 city, 20 highway...vs the regular tahoes 14/19. im sure thats worth the extra $20,000 :annoyed:

that is honda's Idea of a hybrid. I have driven a few. The Toyota highlander Hybrid performs like a V8 and the accord hybrid sedan performs like a V8...... but the insight and the civic hybrid and the prius got no poop.

thats because, unlike other hybrids, the insight and civic are designed to actually get good mileage. sacrifices have to be made if you want to get 40city, 45 highway.

hybrids are useless unless you spend a lot of time city driving. regenerative braking is their redeeming feature. highway mileage between hybrid and non-hybrid models is nearly the same in all cases. the only way to improve highway mileage is with a smaller engine (like the civic hybrids meansy 1.3L).

dude, I am going to buy one of those Peterbilt model 386 Hybrids. 10+ mpg, can keep the cab a consistent 72 degrees for 72 hours on 3 gallons of fuel.......... well worth the $190,000 price tag. It will only take 2 years to break even with fuel at $3 a gallon.

heard a report on NPR awhile back, said that when someone wants to order one the dealer will tack on an extra $5,000.

My dad was looking at getting an Escape a few years ago but decided not to since he couldn't put a big enough hitch on it because of the location of the batteries. He bought a B9 Tribeca instead. I remember them being in the upper $20k range. He also said that if Ford made a hybrid Ranger he wouldn't hesitate to buy one, since he really likes his 94, but the 15mpg isn't really cuttin it in AK where gas is $4.xx a gallon.

Over the summer he rented a Prius and drove it from Portland down to Northern California and at one time got 53 mpg. They're not really that slow, the electric motor kicks in when needed for some more go, like for passing and merging.
