Hey everyone. I was just pondering the idea of rebuilding my motor on my ranger. Was wondering how much people have spent on the rebuild and the time or if there is a magical place that sells a rebuilt 4.0 that I could buy this motor.

Rebuilding isn't hard. Best bet is to tear it down, take the block, heads, and crank to the machine shop, get it all done up and measured, new cam bearings, and then buy a rebuild kit with the proper rings and bearings, and new pistons if needed, then throw it back together.

Got a rough estimate on how much that'll cost?

It is all based on labor costs in your area.

Rebuilt engines have two categories
Short Block, it will have cleaned block, new cam, crank and rod bearings, new rings and maybe new pistons or at least reconditioned pistons, new timing chain and gears, maybe new oil pump, or no oil pump.
But no heads

Long Block, will have the above and reconditioned heads torque down to spec, and for sure an oil pump
No valve covers, intake, or oil pan

1993 Ranger will have a 4.0l OHV engine, they were/are very reliable engines
Best replacement will be a 1990-1994 4.0l OHV
In 1995 front of crank changed a bit, and in 1997 rear of crank changed to 8 bolts from 6 so won't fit your current flywheel or flexplate

One flaw they all had was a weak spot in the head casting, there were no "heavy duty" heads made, even though they sell them, lol.
The weak spot would cause the head to crack if engine was overheated, yes many heads on many engines would crack on overheating, but 4.0l OHV would crack pretty much every time, so no "do overs", if you overheat it you will be buying at least one head if not two.

Timing chain lasted forever on these, 4.0l SOHC engine(1997-2005) had the timing chain issue.

Reconditioned 4.0l OHV long block goes for about $1,800, plus shipping

Short Block $750, plus shipping

Rebuilt heads w/valves, $350 set, plus shipping

Head gasket set with bolts, $90, includes intake and exhaust gaskets

Master rebuild kit for the 4.0l OHV costs about $600, includes all bearings, new pistons, timing chain and oil pump.
So you could do it yourself for under $1,000

Anyway those are the prices.

You need to call a few local Machine shops and ask them "how much?"
1993 Ford 4.0l OHV engine rebuild

Also if you can't pull out and reinstall the engine yourself, ask the machine shop if they recommend any one, most repair shops do not rebuild engines, they send them out to machine shops, so the machine shops will know the local repair shops

This was 2 or 3 years ago. I never trust anyone to put a motor/engine together for me. And always check the machine shop work-match pistons to bores, mic the crank and use plastiguage. Use startup lube on bearings. Get oil to all parts of engine before cranking.
At least 40 hours of work pulling old engine, marking connectors and taking pictures, and putting together new engine, and adding engine back in and connecting all parts back up.

I spent about $1500 id say on machine work and parts. I also bought a mild rv cam, dual valve springs, custom pushrods and new lifters.. Which are spendy and not necesarilly needed. Took me about a week between work and everything. Rockauto sells long blocks.
