ignition coil?

My truck is shuttering and coughing and even makes small back fires when I try to accellerate. I replaced the plugs and wires and it got a little better. Is the ignition coil prone to failure? I don't want to pay $103 to replace it if it isn't the problem.

Well My 3.0 99 model was clattering and making valve noises. My son put another coil on it and the clattering went away.. Them coils that fire two cylinders at the same time are a mystery to me. Maybe the load is a bit too much for them?
