i have a 1996 ranger wit a 4.0 i locked it up so i bought a motor out of a 1991 explorer. can i put the heads from the 96 on the 91?

The late heads in an early shortblock will raise compression.

The late heads have smaller "Fast burn" (more swirl) combustion chambers
and the dish in the pistons are larger to compensate.

So while it'll all bolt together and it'll all work the compression will be higher and it'll ping on anything other than premium fuel.

For low altitude work it'll be unhappy.

IF OTOH you lived in Cheyenne or Denver you'd love it.

is there any power difference between the motors or any thing i should swap from my old motor to the new one

i know there are more differences but im just trying to see what i can mix and match from the two motors. and wouldnt mind getting some extra power if possible.
