Starting problem

If u r short on cash Where I live there is an interstate batterry the sells factory blems for about $20 also if u r a AAA they will bring u a bat at a reasonable price

just started testing. The first fuse i pulled turned the .35 amp draw down into .01. Its the fuse in the front right corner. 50 Amp and labeled as ip fuse panel. What circuit is this?

Got it down to the radio. when i put the radio in we couldnt find a power wire in the harness for it so we spliced into the cigarette lighter. The radio fuse was blown meaning the power wire could have shorted out on something. Does any1 knoe what color the power wire is on a radio in a 99 ranger? all help is appreciated

Which power wire were you looking for?

Constant 12v source, ignition power?

yellow with black tracer will be ignition power

light green with violet tracer will be hot at all times.

Glad you got it figured out and narrowed down!

god this has been a clusterfu**. The radio circuit is drawing .002 amps disconnected. My power wire for my relay for my fog lights was drawing .29 amps, somehow. has the relay went bad? the lights only draw 20 amps max and the relay is a 40 amp one. I can live with the radio circuit draw as that is insignificant. We couldnt find a power wire when i hooked up my cd player so i spliced into the cig lighter, works well. the power wire for the relay was wrapped in that plastic shield crap and should be in good shape. im done typing on a phone lol. You guys are great

Alright ignore all that other crap that I posted before this. The circuit at fault is the instrument cluster / gem module circuit. My dome lights dont work as well. It's a 7.5 amp fuse and when I pull it it draws .002 amps, when I put it back in it draws .28 to .32 amps. What is a gem module and what does it do?

Have you had your battery load tested?

What is a gem module and what does it do?

Module Controlled Functions
The multifunction modules consist of the following:

generic electronic module (GEM)/central timer module (CTM)
remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module (15K602)

The remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module controls the keyless entry, and computer operated locks systems.

The GEM/CTM controls the following features:

wiper/washer (front/rear)
warning chime
battery saver
illuminated entry and courtesy lamps
driver one touch down power window (GEM only)
accessory delay
4 wheel drive (GEM only)

Gotcha. All that stuff still works, but if it all goes out at once i'll know what to replace. Could this module start drawing power when it's starting to go out? It's probably something in that whole circuit that's drawing still, but i'll get over it. I redid the power wire and ground for my relay for my fogs and that somehow fixed the problem, wasn't drawing from that anymore. My battery lasted the night, started right up with that fuse in (gem, instrument cluster circuit). Thanks for your help Ryda, your a lifesaver! :icon_thumby:

Feel your pain!!! :bawling:

Went through this for about a year on a new Optima (that I probably didn't need).
Two alternators, 3 jumper boxes, new radio & another Optima, eight months still had dead battery issues. Professional help was just digging a hole in my pocket.

Had the remote start & alarm (PO) removed and haven't had a problem since ($60).
