are you talking about the little flaps that are under the fenders between the cowl that allows you to get crap out of there.?

Default Rain water

Sounds like this could be what I'm looking for! Can you please be more specfic where these are located. It sounds like you mean on the end of the cowl inside the fender and is acessable from door jam. Am I close? Thanks,Buzz

There are two silver plates on the engine side of the firewall you remove to clean out the cowl. Clear to the outside ends of the cowl are the drains.

You can see one above the air filter housing here:

My Ranger is not old; no one would call her old. She has a bluff bow, lovely lines. She's a fine truck: weatherly, stiff and fast... very fast, if she's well handled. No, she's not old; she's in her prime.

Not accessible from the door jam. You would have to take the gender off. Not sure on an 89, but on my 88 you have too.

i have the same problem but i think mine is more than plugged up drains. i took my passanger side speaker cover off and took the speaker out and used a flash light to look at the firewall and i see rust witch means the cowl is rusted threw. so now its time to dig a little deeper and see how i can fix it.

1989? I guarantee this is your problem:

The cowl rusts out behind the dash...it probably will look like this before too long if it doesn't already..these are pics of both of the '92s I have owned.

Mine luckily only has some pin holes but it might be worse once iget deeper in there...

How did you end up fixing that? Forming and shaping those areas had to be a pain in the ass.

Ya I ended up doing a lot of forming, I had to make it in two pieces. The lower a-pillar pretty much ends right there where it butts up to the cowl, and the cowl goes overtop of it and spot welds to the top/side part of the cowl outside of the cab (right below the drains). I replaced all of that, I wish I had pictures of the outside part of the repair, I just have this pic:

I only fixed my extended cab, I put the dash back in the blue one and drove it for a year with no carpet before I sold it. Luckily my excab was only rotted on the passenger side.
