They aren't running cb band. I think they are vhf or fm signal. MUCH better range.
Did some googling, and apparently most have moved away from UHF/VHF and use what is essentially the same 2-way "2G" cellphone type setup. which would also explain the very short entennas.

It's flattish around here, just alot of pines. I think when I go to do the setup I'll try a 3ft and see what happens, also using my idea for eliminating the AM/FM antenna.
