Friend of mine has a big, old ramsey winch that he doesn't need. anyone know anything about them? the motor doesn't mount right off the spool, it has this weird ovalish housing that the motor mounts to.

next time i'm over there, i'll dig it our of the back of his shed and get some pics. he spent about $200 in parts for it and then never used it. said i could have it for $200

what do you think?

A BIG ramsey winch that works for 200 sounds like a good deal. Does it have cable and hook? If so I would spool it all the way out and inspect the cable then clean it when you re-spool if its dirty. Let us know what model it is when you get to it.:icon_thumby:

found this random pic on the net of a 12,000# pound one

it looks a LOT like this one, but it was in the back corner of a dark shop with some junk piled around it.

so is a 12,000# winch overkill for a BII? :D

Um yea slightly unless its made of pure gold or lead. I have a warn 8274-8000lb. for the front winch and a Warn 6000 lb. for the rear. Consider the weight of the winch + line, hook, fairlead, winch bumper, cables, upgraded battery or duels and how it will effect your front suspention too.

Sounds like a worm-drive winch. Buy it, they pull like oxen.

Go with nylon winch line though. I hear its supposed to be pretty good, weighs less and flexes for a better spool.

yes. its overkill. i have one on my 78 bronco. Its heavy, its huge. and it sticks out really far. but, as stated before, it pulls like hell!

$200 is a pretty good deal. i traded a brand new set of 33" super swampers for mine, and it was used.

Unless you can yourself, or have friends who fab, youll never find a bumper to mount it too. its kinda awkward cause the worm has to go on the bottom. and it mounts through the front, not on the foot.

Yep like I said you add the combined weight of the whole affair on stock springs and you will be saggin. The winch alone weighs like 135 lbs, but if you were upgrading springs n things anyways go for it. It does draw alot less amps than my 8274 except at no load 55 vs 80 so thats a good thing for electrical concern. Let us know what ya do man,

for handlling the weight you can always do the f150 spring swap. Youll gain a little lift in the process.

well, i've got Duff 5.5" lift EB springs on a full-width dana 44 solid axle, so that should be able to handle the extra weight of the v8 and winch. if not, i guess i could switch over to full size bronco springs.

Well shoot if you have that set-up grab that thing and go. I didnt scope your rig specs so my bad. Thats like a $1600+ winch.

Picked it up yesterday, some assembly required, haha

didn't look it over to closely, getting ready for lots of traveling over christmas break. a lot of the info plate is worn off, but i think its a 9000# model.

it'll need a little work, but for the price, that's just fine by me

Should be an 8000#, as I have the same one on my trailer, awesome winch, wish I could fit it under SVT, but too big for where I want to mount it...
