I have a 2001 Ford Ranger 4X4 Edge, can anyone share the steps required to help me in diagnosing the 4WD control module? I have replaced the electric transfer case shift motor…... $100 gone and the wife is still peeved that it didn’t fix the 4x4 problem. Here is what’s still happening with the truck, I have a problem getting my (automatic) vehicle to shift into 4 wheel drive when I turn my selector switch. It’s strange because it will shift after the truck is running / moving for about 5 miles or so and then sometimes it won’t shift at all till the next time I start the truck and run it for a while. I have replaced the transfer case shift motor and the problem still exists. The dash light does not light and I don't hear the 4X4 control module relay pick-up either... Any ideas or good trouble shooting steps would be appreciated immensely. Does any one have a Ford Technical Repair manual?

I can appreciate that you used the search function, and kudos to you for it.

In this case, it may have been better to start your own thread.

Anyway, these things are hard to diag without a good scanner that can talk to all the modules and see what the system is doing.

If the lights don't flash and you get no 4x4 at all then the switch is probably the issue. If the switch is toast the system won't know there is a problem.
