Oil Pump Leak

I have a 1996 Ford Ranger 2WD 2.3L 4-cyl. I had a leak behind my timing cover and found that the oil pump was caked with grime, so I suspect that is my issue. I replaced the o-rings and the pump-to-block gasket and went to re-install the pump. I poured some oil into the pump prior to installation and noticed oil seeping from the weep holes. Is this a normal occurence while the pump is not installed in the motor? Or does this indicate a faulty pump? Thanks for your time.

The oil pump is at the bottom of the motor inside the oil pan do you mean the aux shaft?

Thanks for your response. No I mean the oil pump. On 95 and up 2.3L engines the oil pump is where the aux shaft is on 93 and 94 engines.

the oil pump is in the oil pan on ALL 2.0/2.3/2.5L Lima engines, on '89 and up 2.3/2.5L Limas the auxiliary shaft only drives the oil pump. On a '95 you should have a cam sensor driven off of the auxiliary shaft somewhere, I haven't seen one in person that I've looked at but it should be there and is the only thing I can think of that you would be talking about, I'm with chilsam being confused...

The oil pump on 95 and newer 2.3 and 2.5 ,s are on the front of the motor driven by the timing belt.43,are you saying that you are dumping oil on the pump itself before you put it in and its running back out the weep holes?if so,this is normal.it has to be installed to be sealed.Make sure you have good clean mating surfaces before you install.Rock auto parts have Melling oil pumps for $149 the last I looked.

Hey, now I know what that thing is...lol...I had to do quite a bit of searching to find it...good to know the oil pump is changeable without hauling the engine out of those ones...now I might narrow my search down a bit for a later engine...:icon_thumby:

Mark, you would have to run DIS with that style block if the oil pump is there, doubt there's a distributor drive if they changed that area...

As a follow up, my gut said any leak from a sealed component is not normal. Went ahead and got a new pump, and what do you know, no oil leaks from the weep holes when you prime it.

Truck re-assembled and running like a champ. I went ahead and did the water pump, thermostat, timing belt, tensioner, serpentine belt, plugs, wires, oil/coolant change, oil filter, and air fillter while I was in there. Ran about $600 and my time.

Thanks to everyone that responded.

I just went with my local Advance Auto. $179 with military discount.
