i did let it run but i did not let it run for verry long beacuse i was worried i might seze the comp with out freeon

If it wasn't cold you will have to service. Too bad it wasn't just the switch. That would be very cheap.

You're right to be worried about that.

The correct way to do this is to spend 15 seconds and put a pair of gauges on the service ports. A static pressure below 25 PSI will never turn on the compressor, and indicates low refrigerant. A static pressure ABOVE 25 PSI that never turns on indicates a bad or poorly adjusted switch (or some other part of the switching circuit).
