I have a 94 Ranger 4wd 4.0 with the mazda tranny, it wasn't driven for a while, but now its got this kind of a weird low whine, when accelerating, and decelerating.. but when I have the clutch in, or if its in neutral.. nothing, it sounds normal. I recently replaced the shift boot, and the inner shift pins (not sure what there called, they hold the stick from doing a full rotation) and all the bearings a stuff related with that. So it shifts great. I just can't figure out the noise. It doesn't quite fit into the forum topics I have read so far. Any help or tips would be appreciated

Mine too, I made the mistake of putting gear oil in it once. Been doing it ever since, shame on me for not checking first. But about 30K miles later at 180K it's still working just fine with the exception of that 1,2,3 whine.

hmmm...

I guess I will start with checking the fluid. Its been a while since Ive driven it. And right before I stop using it, I tried to teach it to swim. That might have something to do with it, if somehow water got in there... maybe.

I would just drain it and refill it, only takes about 2.5 quarts.

Mine has a whine when sitting in nuetral (input shaft bearing), so I drained it and refilled with Synthetic Mercon ATF and it is pretty quiet now.

The whine is most likely caused by excessive wear on the gear teeth, I just pulled mine and when I took the top cover off I could see the wear on the teeth of one of the gears.
