I have seen this question on here quite a few times so I wanted to go ahead and post this so its here for people to see.

This is the location of the oil sending unit on a 2001 Ford Ranger 2.5L. The easiest way to access it is from below. It is a one wire sending unit located on the drivers side (left) to the rear (aft, behind) the #4 intake port (aft, farthest from the front).

It is not a sensor at all but actually a grounding unit or switch. When the switch sees oil pressure it close and connects to ground and the needle in the gauge goes to the middle. It is apparently normal for these to start getting funky after sometime. In my case it would just not show pressure during a cold start but eventually wake up and close the switch.

It's a pretty easy fix. A deep well 13/16 socket, swivel, short extension, and a ratchet, I used 3/8" drive. Just make sure to put some teflon tape or other sealing compound on the new sensor.
