i am thinking about buying a mid 80s ranger with a 5 speed transmission. if i was to put a 302 in this truck is it possible to use this transmission without destroying it?

No. No. No. The money you'd spend for an adapter to bolt it up is better spent on a transmission that will handle the torque.

The short answer is no; you'll kill it. If you want to keep a 5 speed take the engine and trans from an F-150. The trans will fit, hook up to you stock clutch line and switch the borg warner t-case for an NP205 or 208.
