ZDDP is still needed for flat tappet cams, the zinc and phosphate were removed because if an engine with a cat burns oil with those additives it will poison the cat. I have heard that a fully broken in flat tappet cam will live without zinc but why risk it when the additive is so cheap compared to a ground up cam and metal throughout the engine?
But what modern engines still use flat tappet cams? It was my understanding this stuff is like leaded gasoline and valve seats. Nothing made today has soft enough valve seats to need lead protection. It's all for old engines that have never been upgraded.

And I remember a TSB from ford recommending the use of lubeguard to prevent a shudder issue.

I was told that the 2.8 and 2.9 need it. No idea.

Diesels and small engines... and it is still in oil for either.

I don’t worry about it, my newest flat tappet engine is 22 years old, it (and all the others) seem to do ok on regular oil.

I got and read TSB's from the late 70's until May 31,17 and never read about using an aftermarket additive in any transmission. There was a shudder TSB for 4R70W's calling for Mercon V to be used in place of the factory fill Mercon. There was also a TSB recommending an additive for fuel systems to clean the gas gauge components in the tank.

And I just found that while drunk...

SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE: INSTALLING TRANSMISSION ADDITIVE WILL PREVENT THE SYMPTOM ON SOLENOIDS THAT DO NOT YET EXHIBIT THE
CONDITION BUT WILL NOT RESOLVE THE CONDITION IF IT ALREADY EXISTS.

That TSB doesn't mention an aftermarket additive, we were using stuff we got from Ford but the actual fix was the solenoid body.
