Removing manual trans with transer case attached?

Anyone ever remove a manual transmission without removing the transfer case first? I have some stuck bolts on the top of the transfer case and it would be a whole lot easier to get them out if I could work on it out of the truck. Was wonder if anyone has removed the transmission and the transfer case at the same time? I do have a transmission jack. Any words of wisdom?

I do it all the time. The top few bolts are very hard to get out and so I just don't bother unless I only need the transfer case off.

If you are dealing with an FM series transmission with the flat bottom strap it down really well to a flat surface. If you are dealing with an M5OD you need to wedge blocks of wood against the driver's side before strapping it down. Even with doing those things expect it to roll to the left when it disengages from the engine. The transfer case's front drop is a lot of weight off to one side with nothing to counter it on the other side.

I prefer to remove the t-case but you can do it either way. It's easier to maneuver just the transmission. If you remove the trans crossmember and let the trans hang down, the top bolts on the t-case are fairly easy to get to.

I have done it both ways and prefer to remove them together even if it is slightly cumbersome with the transfer case hanging off to the side. adsm has got it right.

I like having them assembled more for installation. I've found that I can put a small trolley jack under the T-case drop and use it to help with clocking the trans to the engine.
