My credo
Doing things wrong, until I get it right.
SOHC to SOHC or OHV to OHV only

I can be done, but it is far from a plug-and-play affair.

It is close enough to look easy, but hard enough that if you have to ask how, you probably shouldn't try.

Simple answer is no
1990 to 2000 Rangers used the 4.0l OHV engines, 160HP
2001 to 2011 used the 4.0l SOHC engines, 207HP

Same displacement but different engines, and different wiring and computers to run the engine

If both are manual trans yes
If Automatic then you need the 5R55E automatic to come with the 2006 4.0l SOHC, wiring and computer, and both would need to be 2WD or both 4WD

Also exhaust system modification, you have to use the 4.0l SOHC exhaust manifolds

You would need the whole vehicle wiring harness, including the dash, and the fuel rail from a 97 Explorer.

Yes, 2004 and up Rangers used a different system, computer and instrument cluster need to be matched, and the Body Computer was also different, so loads of wiring changes.
So work-wise probably not a good swap to do
