Definitely not an 8.8, it's pretty clearly a 9". With the million variants of those floating around out there, I'm not surprised that it takes a different seal. The mid 80's were a weird time for Ford.

FWIW my '86 F150 came with a 9" from the factory - most of those trucks came with 8.8's by then.

I knew it's a 9 I was wondering what it's doing in an 8.8" housing. I had a fun time telling the kid at o'reily's it's a 9" in an 8.8 housing and a seal for a 9" won"t fit, I got the same look when I explained what makes the sun so bright to my dog

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
That housing doesn't look like any 8.8 I've ever seen.

No, more than likely the computer gave 10,000 different part number options all with different vin codes, or follow up questions that needed to be asked but the guy at the counter just pulled the first part on the list.

When I worked at advance anytime someone with an 80s ford asked for u-joints or diff parts I basically just sighed and said "time to play 20 questions".

I'm wondering about your terminology.
In my world a housing is the part that carries the drive axles and gears inside itself. The 9" is front loading, the 8.8" is rear loading.
So in my world the housing you show is a 9". They were made from the mid 50's thru to the mid 80's I think, and there was a LOT of variations so having a seal that also fits an 8.8" doesn't surprise me.
