I have just bought a 1994 Ranger 4cylinder, manual transmission, just a basic truck really. No owners manual. Done some repairs but I need to know something about the manual door locks. Is there a separate key for the doors or do you use the same key as the ignition. The reason I ask is that the key I have (the only one) did not unlock either door easily, passenger door not at all. Eventually I was able to get it to unlock the drivers door if i jiggle the key just so, but unable to lock it from the outside. Took the door panel off and lubed everything i could. The doors open easily from inside. Next step might have to be replacing the door locks, if I can figure out how to get the cylinder out. Any help or advice appreciated.

My credo
Break it right the first time. Fix it better the next time.
Ignition key should be the same as door locks. Spray some penetrating oil in the door locks themselves. Insert the key a few times and jiggle it. It should free up the sticky tumbles. Did this to my 98 and worked well.

Easy way to tell if you are dealing with a Ford vehicle that is supposed to have one key work for doors and ignition, or if they are separate. Try to put the key in the lock if it won't go it isn't supposed to work on that lock.

Back when there were different keys for the ignition and doors (Why were there ever different keys for the ignition and door?) the ridges that run the length of the key blade were reversed between the two so that your ignition key couldn't be put into the door locks and vice versa.

My key often has difficulty turning the tumblers in my passenger door, not so much driver's side. I'm guessing due to difference in how often they are used.
Passenger door always seems to require a little jiggle, or a few attempts to open. In general, I just leave em unlocked since I'm in a pretty rural area. Never had luck with solvents/ lubes.....

I have separate keys on my 94. Someone must’ve replaced the ignition at some point. My driver door seems kinda wore out, lot harder to unlock than the passenger door. I never lock them with the key I just hit the lock pin inside and close the door

I have used graphite powder before. Works great, until it doesn't. When I find myself "jiggling" the key, time for more powder.

Misserable day for me today, but I am going to take them out and soak them in ATF and acetone mix for a day or so. If that doesn't do the trick I will get some aftermarket ones.

Soaked it for two days, no joy at all, key is still hard to turn one way and will not turn the other, and if I may say a little Kinky in that the tumblers seen to hang up. It would seem that the problem is indeed in the cylinders, because moving the interior linkage works everthing effortlessly. Ordered a set of 2 cylinders and keys.
