I'm sure some of you mechanical gurus have seen this one before, but I always like to tell these tales of woe to help someone else out who may not know.
Did an engine swap on a 2002 jeep liberty for a customer. Got the engine from a junkyard, the old one wasn't worth fixing because of 200K miles and having been driven with low oil pressure for too long. Got the swap done and the bastard wouldn't start. It threw a P1389 which is "ASD circuit low voltage". Didn't have a clue what the hell an ASD was, but after looking online there is an "auto shutdown" circuit on most dodge/chryler products. The guy who tried to fix this before me put an oil pump in and somehow screwed up the valve timing (go figure) then destroyed the #4 cylinder's compression trying to start it. Apparently the ASD tripped because the computer knew the timing was hosed. Anyway, one post on the net mentioned that the ASD had a fuse so I went looking for it and sure enough it was blown to hell. Replaced it, the sucker cranked right up and has been running like a top ever since. It was such a great feeling when it fired off after disturbing so many things swapping that engine. I really wasn't in the mood to spend the day (or longer) troubleshooting what the hell might have been wrong. Lucky me!!
