If I left the high pressure pump wired to a switch would it cause any problems?

If it doesn't include a fused circuit and a relay... I would only do that until you can actually repair it properly. Don't forget and leave it running... it could be bad... maybe even really bad.

I'll have to find a wiring diagram to isolate the circuit that goes to the pressure pump I know its tied into the fuel relay just not sure if it's a direct tie in or goes through the computer. If it's a direct to the relay I can just run new wires and install a new relay.

I have it wired to the battery and a 15 amp fuse on the hot wire tied across a toggle switch in the cab right now.

It could even be as easy as cleaning and tightening the connections on the relay...

I have it wired to the battery and a 15 amp fuse on the hot wire tied across a toggle switch in the cab right now.
To get yourself out of a jamb... Absolutely.

Just don't consider this the solution.

So I didn't read the whole thread. I'm guessing you have the 87 in your avatar name. The frame rail pump connections right at the pump, under the rubber boot, have given me problems on every one that I've owned. Now as a matter of course I remove the stock crimped on connection and replace with a new female spade terminal on every pump of that era. Keep an eye on the 2 ends because one terminal is wider than the other. I'm not sure if mixing the 2 would damage the pump but why take a chance.

It is indeed a 87. And that's what I have on mine I'll be soldiering the wires to the pump this weekend. Your not missing much just a bunch of trouble shooting and suggestions. Fortunately for the truck (and my sanity) all the people here helped me get it sorted out.

Well that would certainly cause low fuel pressure... glad you found the fault.



Sure seemed like a fuel issue to me.

But maybe the poor connection at the fuel pump was your vacuum leak. Stranger things have happened!
Well, considering that having a fuel pump fail would suck......
