Hi everyone me again.i had a question about egr/smog pump delete on my sn95 donor v8 swap.i was in process of deleting both egr and smog and was wondering what I was getting myself into.like how will it run after deletion.i read quite a few posts that says deleting it would cause detenation on half throttle.and found a few options on tricking ecm on thinking it was still there.like taping down egr valve halfway down to soldering resistor into harness.whats best way people use that makes this mod quick and easy.i bought block off plate already and the screws that go on back of heads to block off holes.

I could see deleting the AIR pump, but what do you think you are gaining by deleting the EGR?

That logic is kind of like saying that the wheel is a tire. The AIR pump and the EGR systems are two completely separate things, that both work towards the same goal.

The Air Injection Reaction system (commonly called the "smog pump") pumps fresh air into the exhaust to help burn off any unburnt fuel. It reduces smog emissions because smog is a byproduct of hydrocarbon gases and sunlight.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation system puts already burnt exhaust gas back into the intake during steady state cruising to reduce NOx production (the only actual dangerous pollutant a gas engine makes) by lowering combustion temps by introducing the inert exhaust gas back into the intake air. In theory this also reduces fuel consumption, but real-world results with that are mixed. It does allow the system to run a more aggressive timing curve without pinging.

So your saying there's no need to eliminate the egr when I remove the smog pump?just need to plug up holes on back of heads after pump is removed?

If you follow the plumbing for both systems you will quickly find that they are not connected in any way. You can remove the smog pump and plug up the holes in the heads. Nothing more to it than that. Removing the EGR system is quite a bit more complex and has not only the EGR valve itself but electronics and plumbing involved in its position and when to open or close it. It's not like removing the EGR on a carbureted engine where you just block it off, retune and call it a day.

That said, the EGR valve on my 302 is not functional, the vacuum port is blocked off, all of the dump solenoids and vacuum lines are gone, and it runs fine and I can pull 14mpg around town on 35" tall tires... I am plenty satisfied with how it is... maybe it'd be BETTER if I tuned it out or whatever but it's not necessary in my case.

It depends on the headers you get and if you are going to keep the EGR since it doesn't interfere with your desire to remove the AIR system.

I'm getting the headman headers that people use with V8 swap part #88400.which doesn't have any piping for the egr.will not connecting egr to passenger side header affect how the air fuel is measured from egr?

That won't have a drastic effect on anything.

I'm used to dealing with the earlier 5.0s that didn't take EGR from the exhaust manifolds, but pulled it straight out of the head.
