Long term, you may have a problem with the dash vinyl popping free from that filler material, ending up with hairline cracks, or separations at where the two materials meet. Especially if you're in an area that sees extreme swings from hot to cold. The dashboard fillers remain somewhat flexible over the years, or at least that's what they claim, so they can flex and give with those temperature changes.

Still, I'm staying tuned for more updates on how yours turns out. :icon_thumby:

Oh I don't disagree. Just planning on this being a patch on the ass until I can make provisions to figure something out.

There is a possibility that the re-skin of stretch vinyl can cover the hairlines, etc. Probably not, but still looks better then it did a week ago haha.

If I had a dash to partice on, I would try expanding foam (in a can), there is non-hardening stuff meant for window insulation, or the regular hardening stuff. The hardening stuff can be sanded to shape. The non hardening you can use saran wrap to push it into shape before it sets and then maybe some kind of flexible bumper repair stuff.

Second coat. Probably won't hold up in the long run. Still looks a hell of a lot better than it did. _20190109_001300.jpeg

Are you planning on using a 3M vinyl product like they wrap vehicles with, or actual vinyl like seats are made with?

Neither!

You see 4 and 6 way stretch vinyl in costume work a lot. Think any time you see some Marvel comics movie with a well proportioned blonde. The skin tight outfits that never wrinkle or crease? This is that stuff.

The stuff looks and holds up like leather, but stretches like a rubber band until it's glued down. It's sincerely impressive how much it stretches. JoAnn carries it in the costume section. Typically holds up reasonably well to UV exposure. In my case I'm not too concerned about longevity. A year or two out of it and I call it a win.

If you've never worked with it before, it's definitely worth checking out. Some of the automotive applications are really cool.

I think I played with the oil slick stuff when I was there with my wife once, it is neat stuff. It gets more see thru as you stretch it which I decidedly do not remember in any marvel movie.

I have pondered having an upholstery place covering mine in leather. The factory stuff is textured like it wants to be leather. Don't know if it would look decent or like an overstuffed leather couch though.

Well. The vinyl was a failure.

It adhered beautifully to the flat parts of the dash and to the corners. However, it lifted from the inside corners no matter how I tried to adhere it.

I used the loctite 300 spray, tried the recommended maximum adhesion method, and... Nope.

So, now to sand off a lot of glue and start with filler primer. You know. Just to finish the botch job. [emoji58]
