Finally, an electrical question I can answer. Those are for your OBD1 code reader. In the tech section there is a article on how to short the pins to get the codes without a code reader.

I had suspected that, but wanted to be sure.

From what I can find, you can get a OBD 1 scanner tool fairly cheap on amazon.

You can, but there's no significant advantage to that over a test light/meter or using the CEL if your truck is equipped with one (your '85 isn't, but by '87 or so they became standard).

If you're going to buy one, check out the Innova 3145 for about $20. Codes are translated to numbers so there's no need for counting pulses.
