If you consult the FSM, it is actually a water sensor that allows Ford to track your off road driving habits. It tells them wether you are driving in fresh water, salt water, brackish water, or just plain mud. They then know wether or not you are an offroader, a city wheeler, or a flood victim. It all goes into a big database for our alien overlords. Or big brother. Which ever you believe in.

Yes, the giant metal weight on your transfer case, that isn't connected to anything, is an emissions device.
ah, you may be on to something about the emissions.
it dampens vibrations at the rear of the transfer case, which is connected to the transmission, which is connected to the engine block. some of those vibrations that will not be dampened if the stupid weight is removed will make it to the engine block. and what is attached to the block?? a knock sensor. it detects vibrations. OH MY GOD!! removing that stupid weight may possibly retard the timing and screw with emissions.:icon_rofl:

you sir, adsm08, were quite accurate with your response.:icon_thumby:

I just wanted some information. I didn't expect a sort of Spanish Inquisition.

I removed mine since it's in the way of the fill or drain plug (don't remember which) and threw it somewhere... might have scrapped it by now

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
My 2011 didn't have a damper on it until I added one, made a major improvement in highway speed driveline vibration. It's cheaper to hang dampers than it is to balance things properly.
