Just curious If any of you ever got into building your own fishing rods? Kind of a rare and lost art these days. I've built a bunch over the years but haven't done it in a long time. Went down to the basement today and dramatically pulled the sheet off my rod building bench. Flicked the switches to see if my lathe and drying rack still worked then immediately went online and ordered almost $500 worth of new tools I dont need...

I hate re discovering old hobbies...

I always wanted to... but fly tying always got in the way.

I do own one high end custom built rod. A 13 FT Rainshadow centrepin float rod... I think I have about $300 in it. Last time I used it I spent more time bird nested then I have in the last 10 years.

When I retire... the plan is to buy some used decent equipment and learn to wrap rods.

What do you make them out of? Wood? Steel? Fiberglass?

I have an old rod with a 1960's real on it, rod is rust colored like steel but is too flexible. Never put a magnet to it though.

It's probably steel... they made a bunch of them back in the day.

If it's a matched combo... and in good shape... could be worth a few bucks.

I have a couple down it the man cave... I think they're cool wall art.

Edit... most rods now days are graphite... but fiberglass and bamboo are still made.

I like to spend more time catching fish and cooking/eating them than playing with my rod..

Reel is a Bronson Comet, not worth a whole lot on ebay. Rod is in decent shape but a stupid mouse ate 1/4 of the cork handle. Rod is pretty heavy too.

I'm the exact opposite, and I haven't been sport fishing since 1982.

Around here the main reason for making your own rods is for surf fishing. Google it centralized weirdos.

All my surf rods are Browning 6 rivers rods... about a $100 each. I bought one lifetime warranty on one rod from Bass Pro... so the first one to break get's warrantied and I buy another warranty. Seemed like a good plan to me. I have 3 of the 10 1/2 footers and have served me well for years.

Never made a rod but I've tied quite a few flys. Used to be pretty good at it. Haven't messed with it in years. I got a few antique wall hangers that are pretty unique and probably had some hands on work done back in the day. Back in the day when they used to put fake ruby's on things because it looked good not because of minimizing everything to keep cost as low as possible. I miss the days when things were made that way. You know, the manufactures didn't care if it costed them money to make a decorative table leg as opposed to a square or round stile now a days. I'll have to take some pictures of them because they are neat. The one has a square or octagon shaped rod or something like that.

I remember when we went to the outerbanks and saw tons of lifted trucks/vans with PVC pipes mounted to the bumpers and 12' pools in each of them. I couldn't drive with 8 fishing poles in my line of sight across the whole damn windshield lol. Are the poles that much in the way in the bed that you have to stand it up on the bumper?
