Any benefit to installing a 180 degree thermostat?

My world is filled with stuff that needs to be fixed
I learn things all the time here! Now I know that if I spill water on my pants it will stay there indefinitely until it reaches 212F, and evaporation is a myth. This sure is an interesting world! This does present a bit of a problem though, as I can't heat anything over 180 unless I'm an EPA-lover, so it will be difficult to dry anything out.

wow, this went left. did the OP's question ever get answered? or Did everybody start whipping opinions out to see who was right? This is another one of those situations where opinions got in the way of real answers. Are there any mechanical or performance advantages to a lower temp thermostat? apperently not but putting better fans on the radiator to run cooler is.

Sure, there are performance advantages to having a lower temp thermostat. If you're trying to make serious power and keep things cool doing it. It stands to reason that if you're keeping your coolant at a lower temperature, then your heads, block, intake (in some cases, egr, coolant passages) and other parts will run cooler, which would help you make more power by not increasing your intake air temperatures.

If you're more worried about fuel mileage and burning off water vapor in your oil, then a higher temp thermostat would make more sense.
