I have a 99 mazda b4000 4×4 in need of a good bit of work. I should just get rid of it but I'm being stubborn because I guess you could say its sentimental. I've been looking for another truck to use for parts, but I'm not sure what other models/motor/trans are compatible with mine. My biggest need is a transmission. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

I won't be able to help, I don't know anything about the new stuff, especially automatics [ I'm stuck in the early 90's, lol ].

Yes 4.0 has the 5r55e, the 3.0 and 4 cylinders had a 5r44e. They are practically identical and technically both will fit but the 55re has some slightly beefier internal parts to handle the extra power from the 4.0.

You need another trans from a 4.0 4x4 ranger or b4000. The 2wds use the same transmission but have different tail shafts and will not work, and any other engine will have the wrong bell housing plus the weaker internal parts. Now the only issue is what years will work, the 5r55e was used from 97 all the way to 2011 but it did have different speed sensor connections over the years and I cant keep track of what years had what. RonD and Transman are good for knowing those details.

Earlier trucks than 97 had the same transmission as well but called the 4r55e. Again technically identical but it was considered a 4 speed auto not a 5 speed. The 5r55e used computer software to create a fake second gear to make it 5 speeds. I think there were some crossover years which had either the 4r55e or 5r55e just to make it more confusing.

If it ain't broke, break it so you have to fix it.

ANY Ranger with a 4.0L V6 ..... the Mazda B4000 and the Ford Ranger were built at the same factory (I think it was the Kentucky plant) on the same assembly line with the exact same parts "on the inside" and some outside (like ALL the glass, frames, whippers, etc.). The only thing different are the "bulge" style rear and front fenders although you could fit Ranger fenders, F/B bumpers are the same, I think even the hood is the same. There is not a penny's difference between the two in the drive-train from the fan to the rear axel. Oh and the badges and stick-on accents are different. The Mazda got the crappy looking chrome trim around the side windows and even the TOTL Ranger XLT did not and looks better for it. Everything under the hood is identical, zero difference. The key is to look for a 4.0L V6 Ranger 96-99

Ironic because in the early beginning Mazda made the Ford Courier small pickup (70's and early 80's) in Japan with Ford accents differing very little to the Mazda equivalent mini and shipped them to the US ready for the showrooms. Ford and Mazda have had a very long relationship. I was hoping for a Mazda Rotary in a Mustang variant!

My ex-wife worked for the Mazda President (and American) out here in Irvine CA until Ford sold it's controlling 51% interest in the company years ago back to Mazda. What a stupid mistake that was!
BTW the old Ford Probe and the Mazda MX-6 and 626 were the same car. Mazda made the engine/ trans shipped to the US and then Ford made the Probe and the Mazda MX-6 and 626 also at the Kentucky plant. My mother had a Probe GT with a Turbo and that damn thing was FAST.

I have a 1997 B-4000 SE Extra-cab 2x4 but's loaded with every option except for the 4x4 (I have a 97 F-150 with a 351 V8 4x4 too), it was a headquarters demonstration unit for magazines to eval. I bought it through the Mazda Employees program with only 5k miles for $8,000 at 1 year old.
