99 Ranger starter wiring help after swap

Hello all. My first post here. I just finished installing a 5.0 from a 99 Explorer into my 99 Ranger. Both 2 wheel drive automatic. I can NOT get the starter to work. I swapped the PATS from the Explorer to the Ranger but still got a PATS code so I got a locksmith to reprogram the key and cut and program an additional key since I only had one key. I can manually jump the starter and the engine cranks and runs so PATS is not an issue. I have looked through both EVTMs from FORD and still can't figure out why the starter wont work. It did work in the Explorer. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

the park switch on the trans is hooked up and in good shape?


make sure the pink wire has crank power. if it does not the interupt module may be cock blocking it.


i would run it direct to and from the pnd switch

The park switch (Digital Transmission Range Sensor) is plugged in and it was working before. The back up lights do come on when when in reverse. Will double check the pink wire to the DTR Sensor for power in crank.
I feel like I am overlooking a ground or something simple.

The PATS is working properly. The PATS light on the dash goes out and I can by-pass the starter relay and crank the engine and it runs so that means the PATS is working properly. I have not swapped around any wires yet except the wire from the starter relay to starter. All the wires in the 42 pin connector appear to line up. The only wires I see that will need swapping around are A/C related and I will get to those later.

Well..that's the thing about pats.

The pcm can run but the starter relay be blocked on some setups. Might be a loose connector on the interupt relay or something.

If crank power is there then it's something on the red/blue stripe....easy to find. I always have buttons or cranks to start my junk because I hate keys too.

I have read through all the threads about wiring after a swap but I haven’t found any wires that need to be swapped except for the A/C wires. What am I overlooking?

Pins 24 and 31 on the 42 pin connector are the same on the 99 Expo and 99 Ranger. So problem should not be there.

But..... the Expo 5.0 uses an external solenoid after the fuse box starter relay, is it possible there's a disconnect in the solenoid wiring at that point?

Try popping off the cover on the starter relay in the engine bay fuse/relay box and manually pressing the contacts closed. If starter cranks, the problem likely is at the 42 pin connector or NSS. If still no crank, look to where the Ranger solenoid wire joins to the Expo solenoid

I looked at the pins in the Ranger side of the 42 pin connector and they do NOT match exactly with the EVTM. Have to spend some more quality time looking for the differences.
