Im new on here so hi everyone. i have a 96 ranger 2.3 5 speed 4x2 and i was wondering what my options would be for this truck as for engine swaps. i would like to put a 5.0 in it. It will not be a daily driver so im not concerned with ac or anything like that

Welcome to the site!
First off, Do you have emmisions testing in your state? If you do then you are limited to your engine choice.

All you need to put it in is:
mustang convertable mounts
dual hump oil pan
remote oil filter
exhaust manifolds or headers. (quite a few choices here)
radiator

If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
T-5 from a mustang if you want a 5spd. if your axle is a 7.5 I would change it out for an 8.8 with 31 spline axles or even a 9"

T-5 is a good transmission. I think you would like it.

The t-5 has been accomplished quite a few times. For a 4x2 and a 5 speed that is the way to go. For an auto a C4 is fine, it won't suck as much power as a C6. If you want an auto overdrive the AOD is about your only choice. If you don't drop the clutch constantly the stock 7.5 will hold fine, shock loading is what kills axles. A factory 28 spline 8.8 from a Ranger would be fine and an easy upgrade for a 7.5. The Explorer 31 spline 8.8 would be really as far as you need to go if you keep to street tires. If you go to slicks an upgraded 8.8 can be build pretty close to a build 9in and cheaper too.

Actually for street use the 7.5 will hold up quite well. If you want the easiest swap then an 8.8 would be the way to go.

Most likely you will have to shorten your driveshaft and change yokes depending on your tranny choice or differential choice.

28 spline 8.8 shafts and 28 spline 7.5 shafts are the same thing. The shafts aren't the issue on the 7.5 it is the carrier and gears. Driveshaft legnth will greatly depend on where your transmission sits.
