Are 4:88 gears with a 4.0 turning 33's a little too much gear for a daily driver??

Yes! I have 4.88 behind my 3.0 and 35's and wish I had stuck with 4.56. Back east going that low isn't as big of a deal, but I see that you live on the west coast where our speed limits are normally 70-75mph. Don't get me wrong it's great when I'm out on the trail once a month, its just the other 30 days it sucks my wallet dry.

My setup is 4.0 + 4.56 + 35 and it runs 65mph at 2400rpm. Not my dd but I can get close to 16mpg on the freeway.

Im runnin a ported/polished head/intake 4.0, headers, 4.56's, and 35s. It is the PERFECT combination. Altho I am running 2800 rpm on the highway @ 65mph

4.56 is about the ideal gear for 33s with the 4.0L (I wish I had 4.56s instead of my 4.10s). 4.88 shouldn't be a problem unless you like to break rural speed limits.

if you do much interstate, do 4.56's... if it's MOSTLY in town, do 4.88's.

I'm happy all around with my 4.56's, 4.0, 33's.

Exactly what Im wondering too. I drive less than 5 miles to work everyday thru town and barely have a need to drive faster than 55-60mph in my truck. 4.88s sound better every time i go off road with 4.0+33"+3.73 combo. Whould an auto vs manual trans make a difference in gear choice to u guys? My clutch hates me when i take my truck down a trail.

The auto has a bit taller OD gear (0.75 vs. 0.79 for a M5OD). You could go 4.88s and still do 80 mph a little easier with an auto than with a stickshift.

Alright thanks for the feed back guys but what if i ran 35/12.50s?? I think that would be a good combo and still have a pretty torquey ride

I have the 4.0L (1996) 4.88's, auto tranny and 33's. I commute every day on it.

65mph on the highway all time worst around town and crappy driving was 15...typically I get no less than 18.5 however and can get as high as 19.2. Spins about 2600 @ 65mph.

It can be done, I do it every day...plus it is a torquey mo-fo offroad or for towing...you just cant go more than about 80.

Would I do it again? Hell yes.

Would I recommend doing this? Hell yes.

PLUS if you go to 35's you are optimally geared for general offroading/around town driving.

If you are even contemplating 35's go with the 4.88.s
