I see an awful lot of 4x4s in the ditch in wintertime. And not because they wanted to be there.

4x4 is much more * Forgiving * in the snow .

Stopping is limited by tires, period . ( When stuff gets really serious , tire chains are the ultimate answer, but that's a seperate topic .

Going in a 2wd with good tires , a little bit of ballast ( but not too much ), and decent ground clearence will git 'r done , up to the point of snow being much above frame .

Steering IS usually better on a 4x4 .( But can be deceptive for non- knowledgeable drivers who can mistakenly think that 4x4 makes driving in snow just like driving on regular pavement , until they end up over their heads .)

Because too many people think they are invincible, lack experience, or lack brain cells and drive too fast for conditions and how they equipped their vehicle.

Exactly.
One time in a snowstorm I was traveling about 10km below speed limit; 110km/hr. Someone passed me in a jacked up diesel 4x4 towing a camper. A few miles later I passed him...he was in the median upside down. I would have stopped but others were already there. A few miles further I did stop to help at an accudent. When I stepped out I almost fell flat on my ass....wet snow turned to ice....
There were lots of accidents that day as it was the first snowfall of the season.

just re-read this thread... I'm so glad I don't have snow here, so I wouldn't have to buy one of these FX2 Snow pack... I meant to say FX2 Off Road Packages.

My favorite is the guys who run dedicated mud tires with absolutely no winter rating at all.

I had a 4wd Ranger with the Edge trim and loved it. Then I had a 2wd Sport Trac with a manual and lived that too. I live in NH and spend a ton of time in Maine and never really needed 4wd. Hell, I passed jeeps in the woods that gave up when I was in my Sport Trac. The 2wd Ranger with some extra protection sounds great to me.
