2002 4.0 4x4 Ranger XLT

Hello everyone. I love my 2002 ranger so much. I put a quarter million miles on it. I blew the motor and want to put another in.
Where can I look for trustworthy 4.0L V6 motors? There is so much out there but i don't know where to look. I've admired to this forum for a long time and know that someone can steer me in the right direction! Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Welcome to TRS
You will have the 4.0l SOHC engine in a 2002 Ranger

You would want a 2005 to 2011 4.0l SOHC if looking a used engines
Used 1997-2004 4.0l SOHC engines can have older timing chain parts that can fail, 2005 and up will not, I would still install 2 new long chain tensioners before installing a used 4.0l SOHC

2005-2011 Ranger used that engine
2005-2010 Mazda B4000 also

Mustang, explorer/mountaineer, also from 2005 to 2010

Best to plan on swapping over your upper and lower intake manifolds and oil pan to the "new" engine, to match your 2002 wiring harness and fitment in engine bay, you may not have to, but plan on it, just a few gaskets and some wrench work

You can use 2003 or 2004 model years, up to you, wouldn't go earlier

Earlier 4x4 4.0l SOHC engines had an internal balancer shaft, but later models did and didn't, so doesn't seem to matter
It was originally used with "Live axle" which had front drive shaft always rotating, I guess to counter balance that rotation
But they eventually found it didn't matter I guess
So 2WD or 4x4 4.0l SOHC would be OK to use in your 4x4
