will a transmission (manual 5spd) from a 2.9L survive the torque if put behind a 4.0L 4x4 ranger supercab.

You will be in control of that with your right foot.

I couldn't keep a fm146 alive behind a 2.9l. I destroyed 4 of them. But I also snapped the rear output shaft off the transfer case, snapped a few axles on the 8.8, and spit the spider gears through the rear cover. So I don't blame the transmission as much as I blame my foot.

Maybe you need lamisil? Or some Dr. Scholls medicated powder?

Nah...I'm good. I got a boot dryer. I put my work boots on there every night. Between that and the warranty on my new truck I haven't had any issues.

Some of the 2.9's even got the Mazda M5OD-R1 transmission. If that's what you've got, the only difference is gear ratios.

If you change the fluid on a 145 you are wasting money. It was a poorly built and designed trans.

If your goal is a 4.0 SOHC I recommend an M5OD-HD and a body lift.

You have a 5.5" BODY lift?

The engine block and trans have the same physical dimensions as a 2.9 and A4LD, mostly, but the OHC heads are huge. You will need a body lift if you want to retain the heater box.

sorry ,wasn't clear about lift . I have 5.5 in suspension lift kit . not too crazy about body lifts . However if that's what's needed to make it work. I don't have air conditioning, how much of a body lift will it need ?

When I had the SOHC in mine the valve cover was all but even with the top of the air box, and basically covered the entire in-board hole, and that was with no AC. I'm betting 2 inches can get you by with minimal cutting, and three MIGHT get you to where you don't have to cut the box at all.
