I bought an 09 4x4 Sport super cab that appeared to be in pretty good shape body wise... I Removed the bed to deal with one rusted through bed cross rail....I found three totally rotted crossrails.. But far worse is the frame cross member behind the cab is totally rotted on the right side...it's right where the frame is spiced and the spring hangers are attached..This is a stress area....In addition the large stamped rear crossmember that supports the spare tire is also rusted badly where attached to the frame rails...But at least the trailer receiver hitch holds the frame rails :icon_thumby:

I have fabricated parts like this for vintage trucks but I would rather buy a new or good used frame cross member(s) if available...
Before I go around at the local Ford parts dept, do any of you know if the cross member are sold as replacement parts ? If so, do you know the part number(s) Thanks

I can't imagine any of it being very difficult although would be nasty rusty to work with, I'd be surprised if most of us couldn't make a cross member that's probably better than the original,

Dorman makes frame parts most of the chain stores can get them they're also on eBay here is just one link

It has been a while since I looked, but the last time I looked for a frame cross member from Ford it was serviced only with a whole frame.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
based on that pic i would look for a new frame.

regardless building your own cross members nets the best results...i would completely disassemble and rework that frame if you cant replace it.

the newer frames are made from inferior....vastly inferior metal as far as corrosion is concerned.

One of the reasons I will never understand why people want newer vehicles.

I very much doubt I will ever buy an RBV newer than 1997, unless I want it for parts.

My next one is going to be a 96 or 96 4x4, V8 swapped, with the 05+ front clip.

My wife and I spent some time cleaning the frame with chipping hammers and long handled chisels...I'm going to repair the cross member in place...The frame under the truck and the cab are in very good shape compared to the rear section..Considering how the truck is used the rear section is still adequate despite the rust damage...A Por 15 type paint and Fluid Film should protect it...for a few years anyways....
Ford could have spent a few bucks extra on different alloy steel that won't rust as easily..This also goes for the other truck manufacturers..at least Toyota frames rusted in half so they had to replace them :thefinger:
The three middle bed cross rails are being replaced with home built white oak rails..I have a section of Ranger bed metal to patch the damage...
As far as buying newer vehicles...In my opinion this 09 performs and steers a lot better than the older Rangers. And just in case some jerk on a cell phone crashes into me, it does offer better accident protection...from the front :D
And around here, western NY state, all the older Rangers and other trucks for that matter ,all long gone, rusted to nubs..
