    Top End Rebuild

Also curious if there’s a way to check the condition of the bottom end without pulling the engine, or would a leak down/compression test be the best way to determine that?

    Vehicle Shipping Service?

I’m considering picking up a ranger about 200 miles from where I live. It doesn’t run and comes with a spare engine and transmission and a bunch of totes of parts. So the truck will need towed and I might have to make a separate trip for the spare stuff. Can anyone reccomend a service that could...

    Top End Rebuild

So I have a leak at the cylinder head on a Ranger with 259k miles. Still runs well, fluids not mixing, compression feels good, and no smoke, so I think it’s just external. Still reliability is very important here, so I’m considering replacing the gasket. It also has a tick when the engine is...

What do you think of this camshaft?

It's an 86 2.3L Turbo Diesel. Parts are pretty scarce so I'm curious if there are any options with machining or if I'd have to track down a donor. The rest of the cam actually looked pretty good I wish I had closer pictures of it.

What do you think of this camshaft?

If I did get this truck, what could be done about the camshaft? Are there aftermarket options for this engine? Probably can't add material to the lobe I imagine..

    2.0L Engine

Thanks for your responses gung and tom, I decided against this particular one but it's good information to know for my search. I talked to the owner and I guess they more just "went though" the engine, and only ended up replacing gaskets, still no clatter from the valve train supposedly..

    2.0L Engine

Thanks for the response gungfudan. The rebuild was done by a previous owner and the current owner doesn't know if they did more than just the top end. Supposedly it doesn't leak, tick, or smoke. Not sure if they did any work to the fuel or ignition systems but I guess the previous owner went...

    2.0L Engine

I'm looking at a 1984 4x4 Ranger that has the 2.0L in it with a rebuilt top end. What is the reputation of this engine as far as reliability, design, known problems etc? I've read the page in the tech lib but I'm interested what owners have to say about it.

What do you think of this camshaft?

I went and checked out a project diesel that's been sitting for a long time. The valve cover is removed so I got to check out the camshaft. It looked pretty good except for this cam towards the front that has some pitting and wear. What do you think?

Cylinder head leak - What to do?

My 91 has a leak on the drivers side of the cylinder head. I didn't notice it because it's in the path of a power steering leak and close to a radiator hose that has a small leak, but the mechanics at a local shop noticed it and thought it was severe enough to ask if I wanted to proceed with the...

    Slack in Gas Pedal Cable?

What a mod, I feel like I just drove this truck for the first time. I accidentally gunned it pulling out into the street :headbang: it's a whole new truck! The original owner told me he thought it had lost some compression over the years, if he only knew!

    Slack in Gas Pedal Cable?

I noticed the gas pedal in my manual 91 4.0L seems to have quite a bit of play. If I push at the top of the pedal arm (bringing the pedal closer towards the driver) the cable comes out about an inch. Should this cable be taut? Not sure how to adjust it.

    Anyone recognize this mirror?

For anyone curious, it is an aftermarket CIPA Manufacturing Co. "Rally Mirror" part No. 93100. Found one on eBay after thinking to search for the dimensions :icon_twisted:

Black fluid in clutch master cylinder

Thank you. That is good news. Would flushing the cylinder be as simple as disconnecting the hose and refilling? Surprised I can’t find more info on this in my manual.

    Rough Shifting Into Reverse (M5OD)

Thanks, yeah I’ve been doing this all week and it’s been working. I’m also missing the bushing on the clutch lever, I’m wondering if that might be keeping the clutch from fully disengaging.
