So, I have seen photos of the first gen trucks with the auto hubs console on the roof.

When I re-upholstered my headliner, I found the mount bracket in the ceiling.

Does anyone know if an Explorer / whatever overhead console fits the ceiling contour of a first gen cab? Interested in using one as the basis for a mini gauge cluster and a few auxiliary switches.

Not really that rare, they are out there. I have seen a couple in yards and snagged one for myself in case I ever figure out how they mounted them with a steel ceiling.

Dead center front in your ceiling are two square holes cut out for square nuts. They're set up just like your Oh sh*t handles. Looks like the bracket with the eBay one will bolt right to it.

Mine didn't have the cloth headliner from the factory, there are no holes in my ceiling aside to mount the dome light.

I did see one in a similar truck on ebay so I know it can be done, just never taken one apart in person yet to see how.

Well. Makes sense. 1985 may not have it. Don't know much about RBVs from 1986 back.

Good idea on the Aerostar stuff. I always forget about them.

Base models didn't get the plush headliner that falls down.

Mustangs had them, probably lots of Fords in general had them. At least the stalk looks the same anyway.

Furthermore 1st gen trucks that had a headliner have a different roof structure than those that don't... base model XL, Custom, etc have an inner steel layer and the upgraded trucks do not.

I haven't seen one of those in a B2 before in person. They are kinda cool. There was a seat center console that had an "information center" of sorts... would tell you if you had a bulb out and a few other things IIRC. I did have a B2 with that option at one point. Think it was an '85 - very high optioned truck - was an Eddie Bauer and had power everything, 4.10 gears and a C5.

Yeah, it is totally different than what is behind a headliner. Cloth headliner trucks with the maplight/clock also have a brace that runs ahead above the headliner that assembly mounts to.

I have seen the maplight in a steel roof truck but it was on ebay. Looked factory... so my hope to find one to fit a steel roof continues.

If you can actually remove the steel roof support piece from a donor truck, it can easily be put in to your Ranger with panel bond adhesive.

I have one of these, in red, up in my loft. As of the last time is was hooked to a truck (I want to say sometime in 2011 or 2012) the light and the clock display still worked.

For those of you who remember him, it came from Ranger Kip's "One Eye'd Beast" truck, and it was one of the only things that worked. It was pretty much that, the horn, and the left headlight, which is one of the reasons we gave up on that thing. Me being the only person around to help him with it and then moving another 45 min south and having kids didn't help either.
