hey guys, so i got out of work and fired up the truck, no problem. went to pull into traffic, and the truck seemed to struggle, but caught itself and took off. about 5 min down the road i started going up a hill and had to give it some gas to keep my speed. well as i gave it gas it started to shudder and the rpm's didnt move an inch, neither did my speed. so i pull over and check the truck over, no flats, idles fine and smooth. :icon_confused:
so i continue on down the road and am thinking, so i give it some gas an it comes back and shudders hard. and when i say hard i mean hitting rumble strips kind of hard. so now every time i give it a bit of gas when im cruising at 80kmh, it does the shudder. it doesnt pick up speed and its rpm stay stuck until i floor it and then it catches it self and the rpm jumps to 3000k. so i booked an appointment to take it in, but if this is an easy fix id like to know. i did put my stock spark plugs back in about 50 km ago, but it ran fine and it idles just fine. start up in the cold is a little longer then when its warm, but i couldnt tell you if that is normal because ive never had this truck in the cold.
please share your ideas, the tech thinks its something having to do with the maf sensor or fuel delivery system.
thanks a ton!! :icon_cheers::icon_cheers::icon_cheers:

well you sould probably put NEW plugs in it to start. when you pull them check em out one by one and see if they tell u anything. if it was a problem with ur MAF most likly you would have an engine light on. you can try to run some fuel system/injector cleaner through it (idk if they ever really work) but it couldnt hurt. is your engine light on??

sounds like its not getting enough fuel, check the fuel filter

nope no engine light, and the plugs look brand new. im thinking the sudden throttle increase is resulting in a lack of fuel. maybe the fuel pump is on its way out. its been really cold today, so that could be contributing it. also ive noticed my mpg go down slightly, before winter came. im gonna let ford look at it, im not in any mood to crawl under my truck when the wind is blowing at 50 knots and its snowing.
thanks for the ideas, once i have this solved ill post the solution for future refrence

swap out your fuel pump relay before changing fuel pump

If it's cold and you are having fuel issues, you may have some slush in there that's clogging the filter.
Change filters and add some good fuel additive to get rid of the water that is there.
My rig has had similar problems when left outside and I don't treat it regularly in the winter.
Good luck

so the update, the trucks running okay, and i say that lightly. it still has the problem, but now its thrown a code and the engine lights on. i havent gotten a chance to scan it though as i dont have one, but ill get my dealership to run it tomorrow. im thinking MAF sensor could be acting up. but agin, no idea. ill keep everyone posted.
on a side note im gona let ford deal with fuel system problems or such. (extended factory warranty.) :c-n: :D
Glad i bought it not even 4 months back.

My guess is the Throttle Position sensor. I have the same truck as you and have already had to replace that. 20 bucks at advance. Easy to replace, its held on by two screws

With it stumbling until you push the pedal to WOT that makes me think its an emission system, IAC, TPS, or MAF. THe emissions system is the only system that causes major problems but is shut off at idle and WOT, that and the AC compressor.

I'd be checking some oxygen sensors..

ok so i got the light cleared and scanned, its a cylinder 3 missfire under 1000 rpm. such a hard missfire it shakes the truck pretty bad. anyways, the plugs good and the wire i havent tested. im just gona run it through warranty and pay my $100 deductable. they can tinker around with it till its fixed.
cylinder 3 is passenger firewall cylinder.
so its a PITA to work on it.
:annoyed:
will let you guys know what had to be done. maybe ill get some new parts! :yahoo:

May just be a loose wire, if you had some work done recently some shops are shady and will disconnect stuff like that. I had a plug blow out of my number 4 cylinder for no reason. threads were clean and everything. I just put it back it and havent had a problem since.
Sadly enough it could be a coil issue too. Just pul the number 3 plug wire off hte coil and see how much spark you get at 1/8-1/4 inch

since number 3 is the ignorant one, and you said you just put your stock plugs back in, im betting you may have cracked the porcelin putting it back in.

good point. im gona swap the #3 after work tomorrow and see if it fixes the trouble. if it does it saves me a trip to the dealer. although my wheel beaings are in need of adjustment. they have noticeable play when its jacked up.

damnit, cracked plug. so when i gaver gas it jumped the ceramic and didnt fire. and i also need brakes and rotors. looking at about $950 when all said and done.
so if this happens to you, check your plugs.

why is it costing 950 to replace a cracked plug and brakes and rotors!!! you should be able to do that for less than $200

*I just noticed the OP is from Canada I thing they hoseya for da parts up dare
I saw that too but was not going to say anything..........I am sure he went to the Stealership
I agree with your $200 price for parts maybe a little more for better rotors
but the stealership will charge
$400=parts
$300=labor
$150="Stealership right to steal fund fee"
$950

glad I could be of help. 950 is steep even for up here, DIY is a money saver, you said you did your own plugs before, do em again and buy an extra just incase. rotors are probably fine unless your metal on metal or in need of a bearing repack. I would surely not pay 950 for that. but then again i am a mechanic. I also could never bill that much for plugs and brakes on a ranger.

if canada is that expensive cant he order parts from this side and have them shipped for cheaper? New plugs are average 6 bux apiece, a rotor is 50 bux for my 1993 4x4 and pads are around 20-30 bux. Hosed aint the word for it.

If its really that rediculous, Ill buy your parts and ship them to you if you pay the shipping. And Im sure someone close will run the parts across the border LOL
Im goin into business now i think. Ima be a car parts smuggler.

well my rotors are out of round so id need a set, plus id get new bearings and pads. nothing cheap, good quality ceramic pads. but yea i had to pay 140 for them to diagnose a cracked plug. dam bastards. but its running great so oh well. im gona do rotors and pads in the spring.
so if your truck shudders hard under a load at speed, check your plugs! you may have a broken one, even though i pulled the plug to check it and it looked fine.
now for a fluids flush.

I just read through this post and thank you so much for keeping it updated. Sounds just like what my 4.0 expo is doing. Guess I gotta dig out the tools and do some plugs tomorrow.

best of luck sir. be very careful putting them in, and dont forget to twist when pulling plug boots off. take your time, so you dont have to do it again.
i was the classic mistake of, i fixed it... but in doing so caused the same problem again. sometimes a case of beer is all it takes to get a mechanic to help you out.
